Google has been explicit about this for years. Page experience is a ranking factor, and Core Web Vitals — the specific metrics Google uses to measure it — are published, measurable, and available to anyone who wants to check their own site right now.

  • Core Web Vitals — how fast the main content appears, how quickly the page responds to a tap or click, and whether the layout jumps around while loading
  • Mobile-first indexing — Google evaluates the mobile version of your site as the primary version, so mobile speed is the version that counts
  • Crawl efficiency — a slow server means Googlebot fetches fewer pages per visit, which matters for larger sites where full indexing takes time
  • User signals — visitors who arrive from search and immediately return to the results page send a signal that the page didn’t deliver what they wanted

Why speed matters for Google Ads — and why it costs you money directly

This is the section most businesses find surprising. With SEO, slow speed costs you rankings — indirect and hard to quantify. With Google Ads, slow speed costs you money directly, on every single click, in a way you can calculate.

Google assigns every keyword a Quality Score, and one of its three components is Landing Page Experience — which includes how quickly the page loads. Quality Score feeds directly into Ad Rank and into what you pay per click. The chain works like this:

The practical effect: two businesses bidding on the same keyword, with similar ad copy, can pay materially different amounts per click. The one with the faster, more relevant landing page pays less and often ranks higher in the auction. The one with the slow page subsidises that difference.

Then it compounds. The slow site pays more per click and converts a lower percentage of those clicks, because visitors leave before the page finishes loading. Higher cost in, fewer leads out — on the same keyword, in the same auction, on the same day.

Why speed matters for social media

Social traffic is the least patient traffic you will ever receive. Someone scrolling Instagram or LinkedIn is not on a mission. They saw something interesting, tapped it on impulse, and are one swipe away from returning to the feed they were enjoying.

That impulse has a very short window. If the page doesn’t appear almost immediately, the back gesture is instant and automatic — and the feed is right there, ready to resume.

Two things make this worse than desktop search traffic. Almost all social traffic is mobile, often on a mobile network rather than WiFi. And most social platforms open links in an in-app browser, which is generally slower than the phone’s native browser.

So the effort that goes into social media marketing — the content, the design, the posting schedule, the ad spend behind it — is all spent getting someone to tap a link. If the destination isn’t ready when they arrive, that entire chain produced a bounce. Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok all become less effective at once, and none of the platform analytics will tell you why.

Why speed matters for AI search

This is the newest reason and the one fewest businesses have addressed. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot all send crawlers to websites, and they operate under the same practical constraints as any other crawler — time limits, resource budgets, and a preference for pages that respond quickly and return clean, well-structured HTML.

A site that is slow to respond, buried under render-blocking scripts, or dependent on JavaScript to display its core content is harder for these systems to read and cite. A fast site with clean markup and proper schema is easier to parse — and therefore more likely to be the source an AI tool draws on when someone asks it to recommend a supplier in your category.

The lead was handed to you and then handed to your competitor at the final step, for a reason that has nothing to do with your profile.

Why speed improves conversion rate

Speed doesn’t only affect whether people stay. It affects what they do while they’re there, and how they feel about your business by the time they decide.

  • Trust — a sluggish site reads as a business that doesn’t maintain things. Nobody articulates this consciously, but it registers, and it matters most for high-value purchases
  • Navigation depth — when every click costs three seconds, people stop exploring. Fewer pages viewed means fewer chances to find the service that would have converted them
  • Mobile — most UAE traffic is mobile, frequently on cellular data. Mobile is where slow sites lose the most and where lab tests on office WiFi hide the problem
  • Forms — a contact or quote form that lags on submit gets abandoned mid-completion, or submitted twice by someone who thought nothing happened

PageSpeed scores are desktop. GTmetrix tested from Pune, India on Chrome 142 / Lighthouse 12.6.1. LCP is Largest Contentful Paint — how long until the main content appears. CLS is Cumulative Layout Shift — how much the page jumps around while loading; 0 is perfect.

The number that matters most

Lab scores are useful, but they’re simulations. ibeam.ae has enough real traffic that Google reports actual Chrome user data for it — and that assessment shows Core Web Vitals: Passed, with LCP at 2.3s, INP at 60ms, and CLS at 0.02, measured across real visitors on real devices and real connections over a 28-day period. That’s the version of the test that can’t be gamed by testing on a fast connection.

What actually makes a website fast

There is no single switch that makes a website fast. The scores above come from a stack of decisions, each contributing a fraction of a second. In plain terms:

Lightweight code — only the CSS and JavaScript the page actually needs, rather than everything the theme ships with
Optimised images in WebP format — typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, sized correctly rather than scaled down in the browser
Server-side caching — the page is built once and served ready-made, instead of being rebuilt from the database for every visitor
A CDN — files served from a location near the visitor rather than a single origin server on the other side of the world
A clean database — years of post revisions, orphaned data, and expired records slow every query the site makes
Fewer plugins — every plugin adds code, database queries, and often its own scripts to every page whether the page uses it or not
Modern hosting — current PHP, adequate memory, SSD storage, and a server that isn’t shared with hundreds of other sites
Lazy loading — images below the fold load as the visitor scrolls, so the visible part of the page appears immediately
Brotli compression — text files compressed before transmission, usually 15–20% smaller than older gzip compression

Why websites become slow — the usual suspects

Most slow websites weren’t built slow. They accumulated it, one reasonable-looking decision at a time. Run through this list against your own site:

Too many plugins — 40 plugins on a WordPress site is common and almost always excessive. Each one loads on every page
Cheap shared hosting — an AED 200/year plan puts your site on a server with hundreds of others, competing for the same resources
Heavy multipurpose themes — themes that ship with 30 demo layouts load the code for all of them, even the 29 you don’t use
Full-size images uploaded directly — a 4MB photo straight from a phone camera, displayed at 600px wide. The browser downloads all 4MB regardless
No CDN — every visitor pulls every file from one server, however far away they are
No caching configured — the site rebuilds every page from scratch for every single visitor
Too many font files — five font families in six weights each means dozens of files loading before text can display
Third-party scripts — chat widgets, tracking pixels, review embeds, and popups each add requests to external servers you don’t control

A fast website is infrastructure, not a luxury

Website speed usually gets treated as an optimisation — something to look at after the real marketing work is done, if there’s budget left. That framing is backwards.

A factory doesn’t treat electricity as an optimisation. A logistics company doesn’t treat road access as a nice-to-have. These are the conditions that let everything else function. Nobody celebrates them when they work, and everything stops when they don’t.

A fast website is the same kind of thing for digital marketing. It’s the road every campaign drives on. You can spend more on the vehicles, but if the road is bad, everything arrives late or not at all.

Which leads to a practical point about sequencing. A business with a slow website and AED 15,000 a month to spend is usually better off spending the first month fixing the website and the remaining eleven on campaigns — rather than spending all twelve months driving traffic into a site that leaks most of it. The second approach costs the same and delivers considerably less.

Frequently asked questions

Above 90 is the green band and a reasonable target. Between 50 and 89 means there’s meaningful work to do. Below 50 means the site is losing visitors before they see anything. The more important detail is which tab you’re looking at — most people check the desktop score and stop there, but Google uses mobile-first indexing and most UAE traffic is mobile, so the mobile score is the one that matters commercially. It’s common to see a site score 95 on desktop and 45 on mobile. Always check both, and treat mobile as the real number.

PageSpeed Insights is Google’s own tool, which makes it the authoritative one for anything related to search rankings — it reports Core Web Vitals exactly as Google measures them, and where a site has enough traffic, it also shows real Chrome user data rather than a simulation. GTmetrix runs a more detailed technical audit with a waterfall chart showing exactly which files are slowing things down, and lets you choose a test server location. Use PageSpeed for the score that affects your rankings and ad costs, and GTmetrix for diagnosing what specifically to fix. Testing on both is standard practice, which is why this article shows both.

It’s documented by Google. Landing Page Experience is one of the three components of Quality Score, alongside expected click-through rate and ad relevance, and page load speed is explicitly part of how Landing Page Experience is assessed. Quality Score feeds into Ad Rank and into the actual cost per click you pay. Two advertisers bidding on the same keyword with the same bid can pay different amounts, and landing page quality is one of the reasons. The effect compounds because a slow page also converts a lower share of the clicks you paid for.

It depends on what’s causing the problem. Many sites can be brought into the green band without a rebuild — proper caching, a CDN, image compression and WebP conversion, removing unused plugins, database cleanup, and moving to better hosting will often be enough. A rebuild becomes the better option when the core problem is structural: a bloated multipurpose theme, a page builder generating excessive markup, or a design that depends on heavy scripts to function. A performance audit will tell you which situation you’re in before you commit budget either way.

Configuration-level work — caching, CDN setup, compression, image optimisation, plugin cleanup — typically takes a few days to a week and often produces the largest single improvement. Hosting migration adds a few days on top. A full rebuild on a properly optimised foundation takes several weeks depending on the size of the site. In most cases the biggest gains arrive early, because the common problems are the ones with the largest impact and the simplest fixes.

Google uses the mobile version of your site as the primary version for indexing and ranking, so the mobile score is the one affecting your search visibility. It’s also the version most of your visitors actually experience — mobile dominates UAE traffic, and much of it runs on cellular rather than WiFi. A site scoring 95 on desktop and 45 on mobile is, in practical terms, a slow website. The desktop score just hides it from whoever is checking.
